Notes

First edition was published in US as Hunch in 1934 by Loring and Mussey.

First UK edition was published by Newnes in 1936. Details unconfirmed. 

Copies in brown and blue-black board with gilt titles. 1930s Newnes 7/6 first editions should have gilt titles. Priority of board colour identification would be aided by reference to library copies or finding a copy in the first state 7/6 dustjacket.

First cheap edition was published by Newnes in February 1937 at 2/6; priced to front flap only. Dark blue-black boards with gilt titles to spine only. The copy in images 3 and 4 is probably the first 2/6 cheap edition issue as Roy Vickers’ Terror of Tongues, which was issued September 1937, is not listed to blurb on back panel of dustjacket.

Undated. The dustjacket was illustrated by ‘ME’. No illustrations to text.

Newnes probably reprinted for several years from an unchanged text block.
